How to match pillows with the colors in my home

Perhaps the most common question we as interior designers are asked is "What color pillows should I choose for my home decor?" Well, pillows are perhaps the most versatile textile element we can have in our home.

Pillows bring color to any room in the house

Color is always associated with the décor style we desire for our space. If we're aiming for a calm and balanced environment, the color palette tends to be filled with beige tones, light grays, and touches of natural elements like wood and fine fabrics like linen or cotton, for example. A room with these hues often feels like it lacks a focal point, and that's where a set of pillows can make all the difference. Pillows in shades of blue, mustard, dark brown, or even black can add the necessary touch for balance.

If our style leans more toward spaces associated with luxury and sophistication, our palette typically features black, gold, silver, white, and contrasting patterns. In these spaces, pillows should complement the color scheme and include more distinctive elements like appliqués, bold designs, or prints.

Another common style in our homes is casual. This means that, even without a defined style, the space includes a mix of elements that convey an emotional touch and also a concern for the space's functionality. In these homes, pillows serve a dual purpose: decorative and comfortable. Large, comfortable pillows that serve as headrests or lumbar support are the most sought-after. The colors used should be contrasting, as they should be easily found when needed. Greens, yellows, pinks, or blues are always good choices.
The style we desire for our home shouldn't be tied to rules or theories; it should adhere to concepts that seek a balance between visual appeal, functionality, and comfort. We view pillows in interior design like we would a fashion accessory, such as a scarf or a purse; they help to create a cohesive look and are often the pop of color that conveys our mood.
